Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 cleared with U/A 16+ certificate, runs 165 minutes

Jailer 2, the Tamil action sequel starring Rajinikanth, has cleared certification with a U/A 16+ rating and a runtime of 165 minutes and 18 seconds, according to reports this week ahead of its worldwide theatrical release on Thursday, October 15, 2026. The rating means viewers aged 16 and above can watch the film on their own, while younger viewers should watch it with parental guidance. Several reports said some violent, gore-heavy moments were trimmed so that the film could avoid an adult-only A certificate, though the producers have not set out the extent of those cuts. The film follows Jailer (2023), one of the biggest Tamil hits of recent years.

The certificate matters commercially. An A rating shuts out everyone under 18, which in practice keeps many families away from a big star film. A U/A 16+ rating keeps the door open to older teenagers and to family groups who are willing to make their own call about younger children. For a Rajinikanth release, which draws heavily on family audiences in Tamil Nadu and across the South, that difference can shape the opening weekend.

The U/A 16+ label is one of the newer age bands within the U/A category. It gives parents a clearer signal than the older single U/A tag: the film contains material, here mainly violence, that the board thinks suits viewers of 16 and above. Parents of younger children should take that as a real warning rather than a formality.

The long runtime is typical of a star-led sequel built on action set pieces and is unlikely to put off the core audience, but it does mean fewer shows a day per screen. That can matter in the first week, when demand is highest.

The film also lands in a crowded festive window. Ajay Devgn's Drishyam The Conclusion opened strongly at the start of October, and Ayushmann Khurrana's Udta Teer moved its release from October 9 to October 23, reportedly to avoid clashing with it. Jailer 2's Hindi version will have to find screens in that market.

Short-term: Advance bookings and screen allocation over the coming days will set the scale of the opening on October 15. Theatres will plan fewer daily shows because of the length.

Long-term: Jailer 2's run will show whether big South Indian sequels can again cross over strongly into the Hindi market during the festive season.
