Xbox Nano Controller: Microsoft's smallest gamepad costs $50, out in November

Microsoft on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, announced the Xbox Nano Controller, a smaller and cheaper gamepad that it describes as its smallest controller yet. The Nano is designed for younger players, people with smaller hands and gaming on the move. It costs $50 in the United States, with pre-orders open now, and goes on sale there on 4 November, with a launch in about 35 other countries during November. The controller is just over five inches long and weighs about 3.5 ounces (roughly 100 grams). It keeps all 18 standard Xbox buttons, adds a programmable action button, and runs on a built-in battery charged over USB-C rather than AA batteries.

Most game controllers are designed around adult hands. For children, and for adults with smaller hands, a full-size pad can be awkward to hold for long sessions, making it harder to reach buttons and triggers. A properly scaled controller that still has every button means younger players do not have to give up any controls to get a better fit.

The Nano also reflects how people now play. Xbox games are increasingly streamed or played on phones, tablets and laptops, not only on a console under the television. A small, light controller that connects over Bluetooth is easier to carry in a bag and use with a phone or laptop while travelling. The switch to a rechargeable battery with USB-C, the same plug used by most new phones, removes the need to buy and replace AA batteries.

At $50, the Nano is also cheaper than Microsoft's standard controllers, which lowers the cost of a second pad for a sibling or friend. For young gamers in India, where mobile gaming is popular, a compact controller that works with phones could be attractive if and when it arrives, though Microsoft has not detailed which countries are part of the November roll-out.

Short-term: Parents buying gaming gear for the festive season gain a smaller, cheaper option, and players who game on phones or laptops get a more portable controller.

Long-term: If the Nano sells well, other makers may offer more controllers in different sizes, and rechargeable designs could become standard across Xbox hardware.

Who is affected: Young gamers and their parents, adults with smaller hands, players who stream games to phones and laptops, and accessory makers that sell compact controllers.
