Santa Monica Studio has delayed God of War Laufey for PS5 from 16 February to 20 May 2027 for 'finishing touches'; PlayStation India lists it at Rs 4,999.
What Happened
God of War Laufey, the next game in Sony's God of War series for the PlayStation 5, will now release on Thursday, 20 May 2027 instead of Tuesday, 16 February 2027. Santa Monica Studio, the Sony-owned developer behind the series, announced the change on its official X account on Wednesday, 4 November 2026 (US time). The studio said the extra time will be used for the "finishing touches", and thanked players for their patience. In India, the game is listed on the PlayStation India store at Rs 4,999.
Key Facts
- New release date: Thursday, 20 May 2027, on PlayStation 5.
- Old release date: Tuesday, 16 February 2027 (one outlet gives 17 February).
- Delay: 93 days, a little over three months.
- Announced by: Santa Monica Studio, on its official X account, on 4 November 2026.
- Reason given: time for the "finishing touches", according to the studio.
- India price: Rs 4,999 on the PlayStation India store listing; some retail listings show other prices, such as Rs 5,499 on Amazon.in.
- Pre-orders: some store listings still showed the February date after the announcement; it is not yet clear how existing pre-orders and physical editions will be handled.
Why It Matters
God of War is one of PlayStation's biggest series, and Laufey was meant to be one of the first large PS5 releases of 2027. A delay of three months changes plans for players who pre-ordered it, for stores that stocked up, and for Sony's own release calendar. Several reports note that the move also puts more distance between Laufey and other major games due in early 2027, including Sony's own Until Dawn 2, although the studio itself only cited polish as the reason.
Studios that delay a game for polish are choosing to spend more time fixing problems rather than ship on the original date. For players, a delay is annoying, but it can mean a smoother game at launch. The real test is the game itself, which nobody outside the studio has played in full.
For Indian players, there are two practical points. First, the price: the PlayStation India store lists the game at Rs 4,999, while some retailers show different prices, so it is worth checking which edition and which seller before paying. Second, pre-orders: if you have already pre-ordered from a retailer, the listing may still show the old February date for a while. How each store will handle the change has not been confirmed, so the seller is the place to check.
There is also a lesson in reading release dates. A date announced months ahead is a plan, not a promise: Laufey's February date was announced with pre-orders already open, and it has still moved.
Peepals calculation: from Tuesday, 16 February 2027 to Thursday, 20 May 2027 is 93 days, or about three months and four days. Counting from today, 5 November 2026, the new date is 196 days, or 28 weeks, away, against 103 days for the old date. Our calculation from the reported figures.
| Detail | Before | Now |
|---|---|---|
| Release date | 16 February 2027 | 20 May 2027 |
| Platform | PlayStation 5 | PlayStation 5 |
| India store price | Rs 4,999 | Rs 4,999 (listing) |
Impact
Short-term: players who pre-ordered will wait three more months, and stores will need to update listings that still show February.
Long-term: the move spreads out Sony's 2027 releases and gives the studio more time to fix problems before launch.
Who is affected: PlayStation 5 owners in India and abroad who planned to buy the game, retailers with pre-orders, and other games planning launches around May 2027.
What to watch next: the game's new launch on Thursday, 20 May 2027, and how retailers update existing pre-orders.
Key Takeaway
God of War Laufey has moved from 16 February to 20 May 2027 for "finishing touches", and Indian players should check their pre-order and the price listed by each seller.
