Canelo fight: Alvarez lands in Riyadh, says he is ready for Mbilli

Mexican boxer Saul "Canelo" Alvarez arrived in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, early on Monday, October 26, 2026, for his fight against Christian Mbilli, the WBC super middleweight world champion, on Saturday, October 31. Alvarez said he was rested and ready for the bout, his first since he lost to Terence Crawford in September 2025. The fight is going ahead even though the Saudi capital has faced repeated missile and drone attacks this month and several other sporting events in the kingdom have been called off.

Canelo Alvarez is one of the biggest names in boxing, and this fight is about whether he can return to the top after a year away. He has held world titles in several weight classes, and for years was the dominant figure at super middleweight, the 168-pound (about 76 kg) division. His defeat to Terence Crawford in September 2025 cost him that place. Speaking on arrival, Alvarez admitted that his focus had slipped in the week of that fight. "The week of the fight my mind wasn't there but ... things happen, I learn and that's it, we need to move forward," he said. A win over Mbilli would make him a world champion again.

Mbilli is unbeaten and is not an easy comeback opponent. He holds the WBC belt, one of the four major world titles in men's boxing, and has stopped 24 of his 29 victims inside the distance. He has spoken of wanting even bigger bouts if he beats Alvarez. For the challenger, that makes Saturday a genuine test rather than a warm-up.

The setting has drawn as much attention as the boxers. Riyadh has been under attack from missiles and drones launched by Yemen's Houthi movement, and Saudi Arabia's capital has seen interceptions on several days in recent weeks. Other events in the kingdom have been postponed or cancelled, among them a 2028 Olympic qualifying event in BMX cycling. Former champion and promoter Oscar De La Hoya has called for the fight to be moved or delayed. Alalshikh, who is promoting the card, has said the bout will go ahead, and Alvarez has said he feels safe there.

For Indian fans, the fight shows how far Saudi Arabia has moved to the centre of world sport, from boxing and football to Formula 1 and esports, using major events to attract tourism and investment. Indian viewers can follow the card on DAZN. Because Riyadh is two and a half hours behind India, a main event in the Saudi night would fall in the early hours of Sunday, November 1, in India.

Short-term: Fight week now begins in Riyadh, with public workouts, a press conference and the weigh-in on Friday. Security conditions in the capital will be watched closely until fight night, and any further attacks could still affect plans.

Long-term: A win would put Alvarez back among the sport's title holders and could set up more big fights in Saudi Arabia. A defeat at this stage of his career would raise questions about how long he continues. Either way, the decision to stage the card amid the attacks will be part of a wider debate on hosting major events in a conflict-hit region.

Who is affected: The two boxers and their teams; fighters on the undercard; fans travelling to Riyadh; broadcasters and promoters; and sports bodies weighing whether to keep events in Saudi Arabia during the security crisis.
